The Complete Guide to Uninstalling Apps on Mac
Why Proper Uninstallation Matters
When you drag a Mac app to Trash, only the .app bundle is removed. Preference files, caches, login items, and support data remain scattered across your Library folder. Over time, these leftovers from dozens of uninstalled apps waste 5-10GB or more.
This guide covers every uninstallation method for a truly clean removal.
Method 1: Launchpad (App Store Apps)
Open Launchpad from the Dock. Press and hold any app icon until they wiggle. Click the X that appears on App Store apps. This method removes the app and most associated data for App Store apps only.
Reclaim Mac finds and removes junk files automatically.
Method 2: Finder Drag-to-Trash (All Apps)
Open Applications in Finder. Drag the app to Trash or right-click and select Move to Trash. This works for all apps but leaves behind Library files. After trashing, manually check ~/Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Preferences, and ~/Library/Caches for leftover folders matching the app name.
Method 3: Terminal (Stubborn Apps)
For apps that won't delete normally, open Terminal and run: sudo rm -rf /Applications/AppName.app. This force-deletes the app bundle. Still need to clean Library manually.
Method 4: Dedicated Uninstaller
Tools like AppCleaner automatically find all associated files when you drag an app to them. This is the easiest way to ensure complete removal. Reclaim Mac also catches orphaned Library files during its system scan.
System App Removal
Some Apple apps can be removed: GarageBand, iMovie, Keynote, Numbers, Pages. Core system apps like Safari, Mail, and Finder are protected by SIP and cannot be removed without disabling system protections (not recommended).
After Uninstalling
Always empty Trash after uninstalling apps. Check Login Items in System Settings to remove any startup entries from deleted apps. Run a cleanup tool to catch any remaining orphaned files.
